Wipers and exclusion

Contamination Control

Wiper and scraper selection to limit dirt, mud and moisture before they reach the primary rod seal.

Discuss This Requirement

The problem

Premature rod-seal wear is often caused by contamination entering the cylinder rather than by the primary seal alone.

Operating context

Construction, mining, agriculture and outdoor hydraulic equipment expose moving rods to dust, mud and water. Housing type, rod speed and the contamination itself determine whether a light or heavy-duty wiper is more suitable.

What is usually reviewed together

  • Select the wiper against environment and housing retention.
  • Check rod diameter, groove size and surface condition.
  • Review the primary rod seal if contamination has already caused leakage.
  • Consider guide elements when side load is contributing to wear.

Useful inquiry inputs

  • Rod diameter and housing details
  • Environment (dust, mud, water)
  • Speed and duty cycle
  • Existing wiper code or sample
